Review Hornblower’s

  1. We’d heard about how good the Hornblower’s fish and chips are from Leeds. On our holiday to Johnshaven we thought we best give them a try. We were cutting it fine for time on our way back from Lochness but were able to ring through our order. We arrived with a minute to spare before close time. The fish and chips were well worth the wait and were fantastic. The chips weren’t soggy, unlike the ones we are used to at home, and the seasoning in the fish batter was delicious.

We’d like to thank the hornblowers for the wonderful food and for going the extra mile and taking our order in advance to we could get our fish and chips in time and fill our hungry tummies. Excellent service, fantastic food.

    • you’re welcome Nicola! We’re just happy you managed to find your way in the end and enjoyed your well deserved suppers! Hope to see you again one day!

  2. Hi folks, any chance you could add the opening times to the new website – my friend was on the phone to me from Johnshaven and fancies a fish supper tonight but didn’t know your opening times or your number so I googled your name but no times given but I did tell her the phone number so she will ring and be in later.

Wouldn’t mind trying your establishment too after hearing good things about your fish suppers in particular but I am in Glasgow and it will be a while before I am up that way.

    • Hi Emmy,

Thanks for your message and glad to hear word has spread to Glasgow! When you do make it up here, you’re very welcome and please say hello to Alex and me!

Very sensible and helpful idea and we will action immediately! Funnily enough we did have a call this afternoon with someone asking our times so I’m guessing this was your friend in Johner.

Right…I’m off to update the site this moment!
      Cheers
      Ruth

  3. Back again to the Hornblower for lunch, after our first visit I wondered, in the cold light of the following morning, if their fish and chips were really as good . You had better believe it,they were. Thank you John for the recomendation. I consider, given the price of petrol, that the 140+ mile round trip is well worth it. So thanks again to the young couple running the restaurant for excellent service and excellent Fish and Chips.

    • Dear Douglas,

Thank you very much indeed for your kind words…you can’t know how much it means to Alex and me. We are delighted that we are satisfying our customers, both with our lovely fish & chips and the service we provide!

Please thank your friend John for the recommendation, it’s by word of mouth that we rely on repeat and new customers and we hope you will now spread the Hornblower’s word!
Look forward to seeing you again!
      Best wishes

  5. Thank you so much for the wonderful meal that my family and I had this evening, food was exceptionally good and the service was first class, I would highly recommend Hornblower’s to everyone looking for a lovely meal in a beautiful setting with wonderful staff 🙂

  6. After my father raved about the Hornblowers decided to give them a try last night, only thing l can say 1st Class,, the chip were lovely crisp and dry, one small point is l would have liked the batter on the fish a wee bit crispier but this is my own preference. As l stay in Angus l will be back. ( even allow there is a chippie on the A90 which is less than 1/2mile away from where l stay)

    • Thank you so much Mrs Dobie for your message. We’re really pleased you enjoyed your supper and are looking forward to returning. Please thank your father for recommending us, as word of mouth is so important and we’re delighted he felt confident to rave about us! Hope to see you soon!

  7. We visited Hornblowers after seeing Marco Pierre White’s review on his recent programme! It was a 60 mile round trip and we were not disappointed! The restaurant was fully booked so we got takeaway haddock and chips and they were without doubt the best fish and chips we’ve ever had! So crispy and delicious! Also the homemade tartare sauce accompanied the fish perfectly. The only thing that could have made the experience better would have been cups of tea to take away. Absolutely brilliant! And seriously good value too!

    • Dear Helen,

Thank you so much for your lovley comments and so glad you enjoyed your takeaway! We do actually do takeaway teas and coffees so sorry you were not made aware of that, you’ll know for next time!!

And please do give us a call if you would like to book a table in the restaurant as we’d be happy to see you!
      Kind regards
      Ruth & Alex

    • Dear Gwen,
We do not have American or German beer on our drinks list. We serve Scottish, French and Czech beer. We support our local Scottish brewer Brew Dog and are currently trying out Deeside Brewery.

  9. Our son, Finlay C. has just started work here and told us how good the food was, with delicious desserts and extremely clean. We took some friends who were up from Dundee here, and we were all very impressed! Everything was beautifully fresh and perfectly cooked, local superb fish with home-made tartare sauce, and outstanding desserts. There are several good restaurants in the vicinity, but this has to be our number 1 now. We look forward to coming back very soon!

  10. We saw that the “Trend” magazine had recommended Hornblowers in a short article so we thought it was worth the short drive down to Gourdon. It was well worth it, definitely the best fish and I have ever tasted. The service was excellent, especially from a young man called Cameron who was very informative and very pleasant to talk to. We will definitely recommend Hornblowers to family and friends.

    • Dear Jennifer,

Many thanks for your kind comments and feedback! We’re delighted you were happy with the food and the service you received. Thank you so much for recommending to your friends and family and we hope to welcome you again soon.

  11. after booking our holiday, I always look on line for restaurants in the area and yours caught my eye, and I am glad it did because the jumbo haddock was out of this world, the only downside to this is your not closer to where I live, as I would visit at least once a week, but still that’s live please keep up the good work as I hope to visit again next year.

    • Thanks so much for your message Clive! So happy you enjoyed it x

  12. Traveling from Dundee to Aberdeen after 3 days business we stumbled upon Hornblowers. Wow !!!
